History of Safe Harbor
Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center, Ltd., started in January of 1990 in Galesburg, IL, as The Knox County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and was a satellite of the Mercer County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. KCCADV stayed as a satellite of Mercer County until July 1, 1993 when it received funding from IDHS and other funders to become it’s own entity. It was incorporated in February of 1990, and received its own 501(C-3) July 1, 1993.
Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center, Ltd. Began with a Court Advocate and a Program Director. The agency has expanded to a staff of six, which includes an Executive Director, two full-time Court Advocates, a full-time Children’s Advocate, a full time Coordinator of Volunteer and Training Services, and a full-time intake advocate.
Safe Harbor’s services include, but are not limited to, court advocacy, a 24-hour crisis line, emergency Safe House, individual counseling, group counseling (bi-weekly adult and children’s support group), emergency transportation, clothing, food and other necessary material items, social service referrals, community education and children’s programs including SHINE(Support, Hope, Inspire, Nurture, Empower).
